Do your kids love PB & J? We've got a simple way to make your own almond or peanut butter and save yourself some money.
First,
I have to brag about my food processor, which I purchased at a garage
sale for only $5 and works great. But, you don’t need a food processor
to whip up some tasty peanut butter, a blender will perform this task
just as well.
Making your own peanut or almond can benefit your
wallet greatly. I purchased one pound of raw almonds in the bulk section
at Sprouts for $4.49 a pound, on sale from the normal $5.99 price per
pound. The jar of almond butter cost me $4.99 at Trader Joe’s for a 16
ounce jar, just to give you an idea.
All you need to do is roast
your raw almonds first, about one cup, spread them out on a baking sheet
evenly and roast in the oven at 300 degrees for about 20 minutes,
making sure to turn them over a couple of times so they roast evenly.
Then
take the almonds out of the oven and put them in your food processor or
blender. If you use a food processor you want to use your chopping
blade. It will take about 20 minutes for the almonds or peanuts to
become buttery and you will need a spatula to scrape the almonds or
peanuts from the sides of your blender or food processor. I do not add
any salt or oil, I like to keep my mine as healthy as possible. Once my
almonds become buttery I then add about two tablespoons of flax seed
just to give it an even healthier punch.
